After a combined 41 years of teaching traditional skill-based
programs the Focused Fitness team realized a need to revolutionalize
the way physical education is taught and perceived. A team of
Physical Education Specialists banded together to create
a curriculum that would teach fitness and health concepts
without sacrificing movement or activity.
The product of their efforts is the Five for life Program. By changing the focus
of instruction to improve fitness levels and understand health and fitness concepts
these teachers found that their students were more motivated and able to learn
traditional skills faster due to improvements in strength, balance, endurance
and enhanced self-esteem.

The goal of Focused Fitness is to develop curriculum that builds
the habit of and an appreciation for, living a fit and healthy life. We want
our students
to love fitness, and be fascinated with the way their bodies respond to exercise
and activity. Our passion has led us to develop the “Five for Life
Program” which starts in the first grade introducing students to the
five components of fitness. As students move through the Basic Program they
are taught meaningful fitness concepts and vocabulary which empower them
to make healthier choices. The links between activity, exercise, health,
fitness, fun, personal achievement and a general sense of well being are
carefully woven together to provide everyone with the opportunity for success.
There is almost nothing more personal than ones own health and fitness. This
program is intrinsically motivating because it is about them, and geared
to help them achieve their goals without being compared to anyone else. Each
student performs pre-fitness measurements in the fall, sets goals for improvement,
and performs post-fitness measurements in the spring. Students compete against
their own past performances to reach their fitness goals. With this focused
approach and realistic goals everyone can be successful. Units and lessons
are carefully designed so that health and fitness concepts are blended into
activity time. In the Advanced Program, fitness measurements and goal setting
are continued; personal behaviors are analyzed through the use of diet, sleep,
activity, and hydration logs. Students can now see how their nutrition and
daily habits affect their health, performance and appearance.
The Five for Life Program is currently being used in school districts
throughout the country. If you would like more information on how to implement
the Five for Life Program in your district don't hesitate to call us. We
are available for consultation, grant writing, in-services, conferences,
and more.
